Chapter Two

Title: The Sum of it All
Rating: R/NC-17 eventually
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairings: Draco/Hermione
Disclaimers: I do not own any of these characters. JK is the lucky one who does, and she is our goddess
Author notes and ramblings: Pre-OotP, so I guess it’s AU now and Draco is ooc. I know it, I can admit it, but I like it this way.

Hermione awoke very early that morning to the smell of breakfast; the sun was just peeking over the horizon. She was excited, “Head Girl.” Her voice sounded dreamy. Showering quickly, she ran over her itinerary for the day. She wrapped her robe around her shoulders and zipped up her toiletry bag. The brunette walked back to her room and began packing the rest of her things. Head Girl meant that she had her own bedroom. She had to share only a common room and bathroom with the Head Boy. In the last six years, she had shared a bedroom with the other Gryffindor girls. Of course, this privilege also came with a great responsibility. She had to set an example.

There was a tapping on her window. Hermione looked up from folding a shirt to see a tawny barn owl urgently trying to get in. Rushing over, she opened the window. The bird forced the window against the wall, flying in and dropping the letter on the bed. The familiar owl circled the room once before flying back out of the window.

Hermione picked up the letter. It had a wax seal on the back with a "P" in the center.

I just found out that the Head Boy is from Slytherin. Fred told me that he didn't know who exactly but… I think that you should be careful, just in case.

Fred and Parvati had been dating for almost two years. Shortly thereafter, about the time she started dating Ron, George began to date Padma. She was happy for them, even though things didn't work out with her and Ron. Hermione had bad luck with men. First, she had the failed relationship with Viktor, then Ron, now she may be stuck with Malfoy for the year. She wasn't really worried; Malfoy and she were civil to one another. They had a few classes together. As long as Harry and Ron weren't around, he was almost friendly. If they got into it, it was usually because of her. She just couldn't help baiting him sometimes.

"Great." she sighed, latching her trunk. There was no way she could hold her tongue for a whole year.
She placed the letter on her bed and picked up the jeans she had placed out the night before. She quickly dressed and went downstairs to have breakfast with her family.

On the Hogwarts Express, she told her friends about Parvati's letter. Predictably, they were concerned. "She's sure?" Harry said. Ginny rested her hand lightly on his knee and answered for her, "She wouldn't have sent the owl this morning if she hadn't truly thought it was Malfoy."

"I don't know about Fred though. He likes to trick people, thinks it's funny." Ron said, with a bit of a scowl.

Hermione looked exasperated, "Really now, there's no reason to be concerned just yet. We just need to wait and..." her words faltered; Malfoy stood outside of their compartment. "see."

The door slid open and Crabbe and Goyle flanked either side of the new Head Boy. The sight would have been comical, had no one known them. Malfoy, tall and sleek. Crabbe and Goyle both shorter and much wider. Harry often mentioned that Dudley looked much like that. Smirking arrogantly, Malfoy motioned to his badge, "Hey scar head! Guess who beat you?"

Staring at him incredulously, finally one of them spoke up. "Did your daddy pay for it or was it all the extra time you spent with Snape last year?" Ron made a suggestive motion. Malfoy sneered at Ron, "You would know about that, wouldn't you? I've heard what goes on in those Gryffindor dormitories. At least with you who don't have girlfriends." At that moment, Ron stood up and tried to launch himself at Malfoy. It took everyone in the compartment to wrestle a struggling Ron still. Malfoy leaned against the door jamb and chuckled.

Ron would have to have realized that Crabbe and Goyle would hurt him in a wandless fight. He just didn't seem to care. Harry, Hermione, and Ginny were all still holding Ron back from an inevitable beating, when they heard a voice.

"Let's not have any of that now. Break it up." It was the witch with the snack trolley. "Did you kids need anything?"

Malfoy gave a malicious smile, snapped his fingers and his minions followed him down the corridor.

"I don't know about you but, I lost my appetite." Ginny grumbled and sank back into her seat.
